New Headteacher Support

Buckinghamshire Council and the Buckinghamshire Academy for School Leadership (BASL) are working together again in 2019 and 2020 to provide a programme of support for new headteachers and those new to Buckinghamshire.



The programme includes:

  • three events
  • free BASL membership
  • the offer of mentoring by an experienced Buckinghamshire headteacher funded through BASL

New Headteachers Welcome Tea

Thursday 16 July 2019 4pm to 5:30pm

This informal event held at the Abbey Centre in Aylesbury is a chance to meet the senior leaders from Education and school improvement at BCC and fellow new headteachers. Refreshments are provided.

BASL Leadership Conference

Chartridge Lodge, Friday 20 September 2019, 9am to 3pm

This event provides an opportunity to reflect on leadership and what it means to lead; but also to bring new heads together to create a network that can provide mutual support going forward. The key note speaker will be Ben Walden from Contender Charlie and the day will include a presentation from some of the last year’s headteachers about their first year. Lunch and refreshments are provided.

Buckinghamshire County Council Induction Day

County Hall, Friday 4th October 2019, 9am to 3:15pm

This event will be held in the autumn term and provide the opportunity to meet members of the Buckinghamshire County Council teams who will be working closely with your school including Social Care, Safeguarding, School Finance and Admissions. Lunch and refreshments are provided.


BASL membership

As a new headteacher or a headteacher new to Buckinghamshire your school is offered free BASL membership for this academic year. BASL membership offers you discounted:

  • rate for the BASL Annual Conference for School Leaders
  • access to a programme of up to 3 half‐day leadership seminars this academic year

Buckinghamshire County Council funding enables BASL to offer up to 12 hours of face-to-face mentoring to new headteachers over their first three terms in post.

If you choose to accept this offer, you will be paired with an experienced headteacher who has completed mentor training.
