Governing bodies are responsible for ensuring that admissions (and attendance) registers are maintained, but the register itself can be kept by appropriate school staff. A pupil is placed on the admission register on the first day he/she is expected to attend. Attendance and absence data is collected from the registers via the School Census. (Applies to all schools except in the case of a school of which all the pupils are boarders)
