School Avoidance and Reintegration

‘Emotionally-based school avoidance’ – a term describing children and young people who have a severe difficulty in attending school due to emotional factors – has a profound impact on individuals, families and schools. This course, delivered by professionals from the Educational Psychology team, will explore the most up to date research and guidance around supporting individuals who display EBSA, and include training on best practice for facilitating a return to school.


  • Gain and understanding of the nature and scope of the issue of emotionally-based school avoidance.
  • Identify the risk and protective factors related to the emergence and maintenance of EBSA.
  • Consider the proactive role of schools in helping to achieve positive outcomes for those displaying EBSA.
